NO PHOTOGRAPHY ALLOWED
In my circle of family and friends, I’m known as the photographer. I’m the one responsible for taking pictures at birthdays, weddings, and on vacation. I’m also the one who sneaks in those crazy pictures that no one really wants taken but they make us laugh. I love being the one to document these moments and to be able to share with everyone. You could say the camera is my right arm or an extra appendage. But what do you do when the event or venue doesn’t allow photography? My photos are my memories to look back on, and when I can’t have my camera to document the occasion, I have to resort to different tactics to accomplish this.

Places that I’ve been when I wasn’t allowed to use a camera include concerts, museums, plays, and more. This is when tickets stubs, brochures, postcards, and programs become your memories or memorabilia. Although photography during the performances isn’t allowed, I always have a camera in my purse to capture a group picture beforehand or a street scene entering the venue. In most cases, purchasing postcards and photographs from the event are better than you can expect to get with your camera.

Don’t let the lack or nonexistence of photos diminish your memories. Collect the memorabilia and create a scrapbook layout to capture the memory.

  • Photography wasn’t allowed in the exhibit of Jacqueline Kennedy: The White House Years. The museum had a gift store with wonderful postcards that showcased the exhibit.

  • Triple Espresso was a very funny stage comedy that I went to with my girlfriends. In most cases, theatres do not allow photography for several reasons: it isn’t safe for the performers to have the flash of a camera going off, and it is also very disruptive to the performance. To document this memory, I made a copy of the front cover of the playbill and added a group picture that we took in the lobby of the theatre.

  • Although photography was allowed at this Tim McGraw and Faith Hill concert, it would have been hard to get a quality photo with the type of lighting and distances you have to deal with. The venue only allowed point and shoot cameras and wouldn’t allow me to bring in my SLR. Although I was disappointed at the time, I was better off purchasing a $5 picture from the Fan Booth.

  • Along with a copy of the front cover of the playbill, I added a street scene of the theatre sign and the show tickets. Tickets are a great source of information. They include addresses, dates, and prices. Someday, our children’s children will be amused by prices we paid for things.
