A LAYOUT HAS 4 SIDES
It’s easy to become a creature of habit. I like to think that I’m not one, but I am. Not only in everyday life do I catch myself going through the same motions, but also in my scrapbooking. Now, it’s not a bad thing to perfect something you really like and use it. But sometimes it becomes a rut you just can’t get out of.

For my layout ideas this month I started with the traditional title border at the top. If you looked back at my scrapbooks of many years ago, this is where you would see all my titles and borders. I think that’s an “A” type personality... it’s natural to start at the top and work down. So for the following layouts, I worked my way around the layout creating a title border using all 4 sides.

I hope these ideas help you get out of a scrapbooking rut or give you just enough inspiration to try something new.

Happy Scrapbooking,
Julie
Layout 1: FIELD TRIP
Supplies Used:
  • Debbie Mumm’s Celebrations CD by Debbie Mumm
  • Debbie Mumm Background Paper, #3701 Lavender-Green
  • Cardstock, 2 shades of grey
  • Large silver paper fasteners by Miss Elizabeth
Instructions:
  1. Open up a workspace; I use Microsoft Word. Copy and paste the “School House” and “Bus” graphics. Size the school house to 2.5” x 1.67” and the bus to 1.15” x 2.31”. Copy and paste the bus to have a total of 4. Flip 2 of the buses by clicking on the Draw command in Word and then clicking Flip Horizontally.
  2. Format your paper to landscape and size to 8½” x 12” Space the buses and school house across the length of the layout with the school house in the middle. Add text boxes and create desired title or journaling. I created a text box on either side of the school house above the buses and repeated the words “Field Trip” using LD Lanky Font in size 40. Under the graphics is one text box where I repeated “Milwaukee Public Museum” using the same font in size 46.
  3. Cut out the title border close to the journaling and trim around the top of the school house. Mat onto dark grey cardstock. Cut 6, ½” squares placing 3 on either side of the grey mat next to the school house bell. In the middle of the 3 squares, place a paper fastener.
  4. Adhere the title border to the top of the background paper. Mat photos using both shades of grey and adhere to layout with any other desired embellishments.

Layout 2: FRIEND
Supplies Used:
  • Tribute to Women 2 Creatable by Lori Gardner
  • Cardstock, Dark Brown, Gold, Tan
  • Dark Green textured cardstock, source unknown
  • Small bronze paper fasteners by Stampin’ UP
  • Ink Pad, ColorBox Bronze Cat’s Eye
  • Metal Trimmed Stickers by Miss Elizabeth’s
  • Typewriter Numbers by Nostalgiques
  • Clock Hands, Watch, Calendar Stickers by Nostalgiques
Instructions:
  1. Open up a workspace; I use Microsoft Word. Copy and paste the “Shoe Leopard Print”, “BDR Leopard”, “Friend”, and “BDR Hat Daisy”. Size the shoe and the BDR Leopard to 2” wide. Copy and paste so you have 2 shoes. Copy and paste the BDR Hat Daisy to have a total of 5. Rotate 2 of the BDR’s and then line them up right next to each other to create a wallpaper effect. Size the Friend graphic to 1½” tall. Print onto tan cardstock.
  2. Trim the wallpaper background to 5½” x 7” and adhere to the top left corner of the dark brown cardstock. Cut 2, ½” strips of the textured green cardstock and adhere across the top of the layout starting 1” from the top. Cut a 1” green strip and adhere 1” from the bottom of the layout.
  3. Tear out the word FRIEND, the shoes, and the leopard border. The shoes and the Leopard border should be torn to be approximately the same size. Ink the torn edges. Adhere to the layout along the right side as shown. Randomly place small bronze paper fasteners to the graphics.
  4. Double-mat your desired photo using gold and textured green cardstock. Leave a 2/3” green border along the left edge of the mat and attach 2 bronze paper fasteners. Adhere to the layout under the top 2 green strips and next to the FRIEND title.
  5. With remaining space in the lower left corner place a circle to represent a clock. Ink the circle to give it an aged look. Decorate using listed stickers.

Layout 3: GS FUN
Supplies Used:
  • Circus Alphabet Creatable by Sapna
  • Unforgettable Creatable by Tammy Sherman
  • Cardstock, tan and fuchsia, white
  • Large paperclip
  • Tan embroidery floss
  • Brown polka dot ribbon by Miss Elizabeth’s
  • Silver Alphabet brads, source unknown
  • Metal Flower by Making Memories
  • Ink Pad, ColorBox Bronze Cat’s Eye
Instructions:
  1. Open up a workspace; I use Microsoft Word. Copy and paste the desired letters from the Circus Alphabet Creatable. My title reads “GS Fun” (Girl Scout Fun). Size the letters to fit your layout. Change the color of the alphabet by going to format, picture, and then change the Brightness to 40% and the Contrast to 35%. Print onto white cardstock and trim.
  2. From the Unforgettable Creatable, copy and paste the “BGD Dots”, and “BGD Stripes”. Size each BGD to fill half of the page and print onto white cardstock. Completely trim the BGD Dots background and adhere to a tan layout ¾” from the top and left edges. Frame the edge of the BGD Dot with ¼” strips of fuchsia, extending the fuchsia strips to the right edge of the layout. Ink along the top, bottom and left edge of the layout.
  3. Adhere the alphabet letters to the BGD Stripes paper and trim to leave a ¼” border above and below the graphic.
  4. Create fuchsia tags to measure the width of your alphabet graphic and 4” tall. Taper the top edges approximately 1” down on the edges. Adhere the alphabet graphic ¼” from the bottom of the tag. Fold over the top edge of the tag and attach in place by sewing and “X” with embroidery floss. Ink the edges of the tags. Adhere to the bottom of the layout.
  5. Arrange pictures onto layout and embellish with the ribbon, paperclip, metal flower, and alphabet brads.

Layout 4: FALL 2005
Supplies Used:
  • Happy Father’s Day Creatable by Jeriann Sabin
  • BasicGrey Aged & Confused Sublime Collection Lemonade background paper
  • Cardstock, Dark Brown, Olive Green
  • Natural color handmade paper
  • Sage Green Vellum
  • Bronze Eyelets by Making Memories
Instructions:
  1. Open up a workspace; I use Microsoft Word. Copy and paste “Feather02” and size to 10”. Copy to have a total of 3 feathers. Space out evenly and print onto the handmade paper. Tear out each feather individually and arrange down the left side of the layout.
  2. Adhere a 1” olive strip of cardstock 1½” from the bottom of the layout.
  3. Create a title and journaling and print onto vellum with the landscaped format. Hint: The vellum doesn’t have to run the whole width of the layout. Placing a photo over the vellum stripe allows you to make a splice under the photo and space as desired. I used 2 Peas Billboard font.
  4. Mat photos using olive green and dark brown cardstock. Arrange onto layout with the vellum title. Randomly add eyelets to the vellum to attach to the layout.
