Having Fun with Fotos!

Happy New Year!! I hope you are all back safe and sound from your Thanksgiving and Christmas trips, all rested from Chanukah and happily recovered from Kwanza! Whatever the holiday you celebrated or are celebrating, most of us are now celebrating the beginning of a new year! It seems like only yesterday we were worried about our computers crashing as we hit 2000 and here we are starting 2006!

I know that a lot of you got software for Christmas! (Don’t ask me how I know- I just do…) Some of you ask for it, some of you are getting into computer software while digging heels into the carpet saying, “no, no, I won’t go!” and others have been looking at the pages in digital magazines saying “I can do that!” You are right! You can do it! And some of you want to scrap your Christmas photos this month. My crafter friends love to use the Christmas Creatables months before the Holiday while my scrapbooking friends use them after Christmas.

Let’s talk software programs:

For those of you who got Microsoft Digital Image Pro, it is very easy to use right out of the box. I use it for most of my articles because of the ease of use and affordability. Adobe Photoshop is the much sought after, fabulous and high end package. But to start, it is more than you really need and takes a bit to learn. Adobe Photoshop Elements is another great favorite and takes a bit longer to learn than some, but is worth the effort. It has great tutorials available at many sites online and with both of these, there are great books available. Paint Shop Pro is a lot like Photoshop and Elements and is great fun. There are a lot of tutorials available to help you learn it as well.

Another easy to learn software is Photo Impact. However, nowadays you can’t really go wrong with any software package. I recently ordered FxFoto to try it out and I have had a lot of fun playing with it. It is a great software program to give to a new digital scrapper. It has some fun effects that look much harder to achieve than they are with the program. I love the effects of Dreamsuite Software. You can use it as a plug-in with your Adobe software packages. Foto Fusion is great software to help you create projects using a multitude of photos. It does the thinking and arranging for you. Our computers, scanners and cameras may be packaged with various software to get us started using them. Explore, experiment and investigate those packages.

There are also several fun programs that help you create kaleidoscope pages and most of the programs accept plug-ins that you can buy or find free as a download online.

Let’s rip open those boxes, put the new software in the computer and create something!

Project 1: Snowguys Card
The Snowguys Creatable will be great for layouts and crafts for gifts to brighten someone’s day whether they have snow or not. I love the light and airy feel of them. The pages exude fun!
  1. Create a new page in Digital Image Pro.
  2. Go to effects and use bumps and craters. I exaggerated it a bit to make sure it would show up for you.
  3. Add a shape to the layout and use the same bumps and crater effect to have the snowguys standing in the snow.
  4. Add your text using PC Brita font.
  5. I used blue for the inside of the card and copied and pasted snowfolks.
  6. I added a photo of my family under the snowfolks and brush away the snow with the transparency brush.

Project 2: Santa, I Want a Puppy for Christmas

Using Santa’s Express with HugClub member Janet’s doggies, Dollar and Penny. I love this Creatable because of the warm rich colors. These gold, green and red tones make you feel warm and toasty inside. Can’t you just feel the warmth in the fireplace as you put out the milk and cookies for Santa?

  1. Create a new 12 x 12 page in Digital Image Pro
  2. Add a page of each color and overlap them to create a three color page.
  3. Add the berry card tag and train cars from the same Creatable. I added the painted images and used the magic wand tool to remove the white.
  4. Add shadows to each part of the page.
  5. Add your real puppy photos to the cars on the train for a fun effect.
  6. *For version 2b just tuck photos under the red layer.

Project 3: Blessed to Have a Friend

Using the same background papers from Santa’s Express.

  1. Add red background to 12 x 12 page.
  2. Add gold to use as mat. You may want to bevel it using bevel plug in found online. (You can find it doing a Google Search and follow download instructions to put it in your DIP plug in folder)
  3. Add your photos and your text.
  4. Add your clipart and add shadows to each piece to give more depth.

*I duplicated the photo and changed it to black and white. I placed the color photo on the bottom layer and erased away color or my photo with the transparency brush.

Project 4: Oreo
Cindy sent me this photo of Oreo, her wonderful fur kid!
  1. I created a new page and filled it with color. I added the paw print paper from Cats and then made it almost transparent with the transparency tool in DIP. I let the blue slightly overshadow the paws. I wanted a hint of the paws to show through.
  2. The images are all from Cats.
  3. I added text and added image art to decorate the text by erasing parts of the image with the transparency tool.
  4. I used the shadow tool in DIP and added shadows.
  5. I used the bevel effect on the title.

Project 5: A Taste of Paste

Using Teach Kindness.
The chalkboard on a simple black background makes a wonderful page.

  1. I cloned out the writing and added a poem from “A Taste of Paste”.
  2. I beveled the title to make it stand out from the rest of the page.
  3. I beveled the chalk board.
Project 5

There you have it! These are some very simple but fun pages that anyone can do. I downloaded my favorite bevel plug-in from the internet. I found it and others by doing a search for plug-ins that will work for Digital Image Pro.

  1. Your assignment for this month, should you decide to accept it:
  2. Make every moment count by showing people that you care.
  3. Make a difference in the world by being kind.
  4. Decide to be happy and to help make others happy.
  5. Do something special for your family and your best friend.
  6. Meet me back here next month.
Hugs,
Thena
