C is for Christmas

If you love Christmas, raise your hand! Even though we have a simple and quiet celebration now as empty nesters, I love the season as well as the reason! With two rowdy pups in the house, I have long ago ceased decorating from floor to ceiling and the big tree has been replaced by a small one that can be placed on a table out of the reach of little puppy paws!

With the economy the way it is at present, I hear more people saying they are creating hand made gifts for Christmas as well as creating their own cards. While a good many of us would normally be doing this, a greater number are joining our ranks. We give them hearty “Welcome to our World!”

I’d like to share a few fun and simple things you can do to get in the Christmas spirit!

A good place to start your Christmas planning is with Nativity by Laurie Furnell.

Project 1: Christmas Card with Bookmark
  1. Create a new 8 x 10 page at 300 dpi.
  2. Add image from Nativity. (This will be the front of your card.)
    * Use the smaller image from Nativity as a bookmark to include with your card
  3. Add verse from C is for Christmas by Thena Smith

Project 1a: Add an effect to nativity image
  1. I took the image into Adobe and used a fur effect on it. This might inspire some of the rug makers and weavers to create a punched rug--remember those?

Project 2: Create a Snowman with simple shapes
  1. Add a shape, circle, no line for line thickness.
  2. Fill with shape and then use a filter to make it more snow like.
  3. Create three balls of snow and stack them to form snowman.
  4. Add circles and fill with black for coal eyes and buttons, etc.
  5. Follow diagram to create top hat.

Project 3: Personalized Gift Tags
Use Christmas Friends by Tina Ledbetter
  1. Create a new page and pull onto it the tags you want to use.
  2. Add photo of family, friend or the gift you are giving.
  3. To make it pop a bit more, use dodge or burn tool on areas of the image and choose areas to bevel.
  4. Cut out part of gift or frame, paste it back and then use the bevel function.

Project 4: Christmas Card using Christmas Friends
(Use Verse from C is for Christmas)
  1. Do something wild and crazy such as cutting out sections of the design, pasting it back on the original and using the bevel, then shadow effect.
  2. Add a verse from C is for Christmas.

Project 5: Use Simple Shapes to Form a Christmas Tree
  1. Add shape (triangle) and fill with green or two color gradient green.
  2. Use Insert/Draw a line to create a side of tree.
  3. For different look use distortion brush to create a different look.
Use the brush to pull down some of the green into interesting shape.
-If you are concerned about matching both sides of the tree shape, try creating one side, then copy and paste to have a duplicate side. Use the dodge and burn tool to add interest and depth.
-Experiment with adding white, adding effects and layering to create the illusion of snow and make a scene for an original Christmas card.

Project 5a: Create a Snow Scene Using Tree
  1. I created a shape (rectangle).
  2. I filled it with white.
  3. I added an effect, bumps and craters, in Digital Image Pro. (Filters, all effects, bumps and craters circle brush).
  4. I then added it over my scene.
Here’s the little scene I created.
