In Honor of Nicky
(and all other Much Loved Fur Family)
So many of our Hugsisters (that is what we call our pcCrafter message board friends) have lost their sweet fur family member in this last few months that I would like to take this opportunity to honor our fur friends.
My dear friend Lucy lost her precious Nicky this month and I wanted to share with you some pages I did for her. Lucy asked me not to show her tear filled eyes and sad face in the photos but I had to use one that showed her emotions and love for her sweet Nicky in some way. So I relied on effects in DIP*. By using these, it gives you a hint of her love for him.
But please don’t wait until you have suffered a loss to create a pet page. Create a fun page of you and your pet taking a walk, having a snack, learning a trick, etc. We have some really cute HugWare now that you can use with pet pages but you don’t have to be limited to pet specific image art and backgrounds…. you can use the regular images that you do on your people pages. Laurie Furnell does wonderful pet art!
Let’s look at some pages now and document some of the love we feel for our pets.
* I am working in Digital Image Pro 10 unless I use a plug in or list another program.
Project 1: Lucy and Nicky
Thank you to my dear friend Lucy for allowing me to use this precious photo of her and Nicky.
  1. I used effects to make a sketch like photo of Lucy and then made it almost transparent.
  2. I copied and pasted a second photo on top and used the transparency tool to erase Nicky so he would be showcased.
  3. This is a simple but effective page that can be placed in her scrapbook or framed. Scrapbooking doesn’t have to complicated – just meaningful.

Project 2: God Bless my Friends
  1. I used the Diffused Glow effect on the photo of Nicky at the window
  2. I applied the Dry Brush effect to make him stand out more.
  3. I added a poem to the page.
  4. To step it up a bit I added the entire page to a larger background and rearranged the items a bit.
  5. I added a shape and with the eyedropper tool, chose the color of the windowsill for my background color.
  6. In Digital Image Pro, I used effects, then texturize.
  7. I changed the background into pencil sketch in DIP and framed Nicky’s face which I left in color. I added a white border around the selected area.
  8. Using borders in DIP I added a frame around the entire page.
*For the white tips of the paws: In order to make them show up, I created a cutout of the white tips, cut and pasted in with a hint of a shadow. Otherwise, Nicky looked as if his leg ended without a paw.

Project 3: Creating Elements from a photo
  1. In this photo, I took out the background and left the adorable kitty face.
  2. I used the lasso tool and cut around the full photo of Nicky.
  3. I used the chrome effect and can now use these as elements for a page.

Project 4: Creating an Album Page with a Poem
  1. Create a new page and add shape.
  2. Fill shape with color.
  3. Add images from Cats by Laurie Furnell and then add poem.
Project four
There you have it! Several simple pages, but pages with impact and emotion. These simple pages may help you get your creative juices flowing.
Thank you again to my friend, Lucy, for allowing me to use photos of her much loved Nicky.
Your assignments should you choose to accept them:
  1. Hug someone!
  2. Hug your pet and treat them with the respect they deserve.
  3. Teach your kids to treat all animals kindly.
  4. Take photos of your pets and create a page.
  5. Hug someone else!
  6. Check out Laurie’s other Creatables and if you like my verses, check the shopping section for “Where’s Thena? I Need a Poem About…"
  7. Meet me back here next month!
Hugs,
Thena
