I Love a Parade

Californians love a parade! Coronado folks love our Coronado parades, especially the Independence Day Parade! Folks come from near and far to watch it and also to participate in it. It's a fun and festive day! I know that I tell you about it every 4th of July, but even after all of these years, it's still a special day.

For the first project, I'm using Debbie Mumm's Sea to Shining Sea Creatable to show you some photos of our local parade.

For those of you using Digital Image Pro, the Plug-in by AV Bros Page Curl Pro will work in Digital Image Suite 2006 (and several other versions).

Project 1: We Love a Parade
  1. Choose your papers from Debbie Mumm's Sea to Shining Sea and place in the order you desire.
  2. Apply your photos to the pages and then add the AV Bros page curl filter to each layer one at a time. Follow the prompts on the filter.
  3. Add your title and text.
  4. Spiral effect achieved by using a Photoshop action from Panos FX.

Project 2: Personal Size Notebooks
  1. I used art from Laurie Furnell’s Star Spangled Summer but you may have another favorite in mind. (I love Laurie Furnell’s work!)
  2. Create some special little spiral notebooks from scratch or by covering some inexpensive spiral notebooks from the drugstore, etc.
(I had to check with the ladies on the message board to see whether they found it easier to create a new front for the notebooks or cover the original one. People did it both ways.)
  3. I think it is easier to print your design on cardstock and use a punch to punch out the holes matching it up exactly. A 1/8 inch punch seems to work well.
  4. Carefuly remove the original cover by unwinding the spirals, then rewind the spirals back through your newly printed and hole punched cover.
These little books are great to share with friends on those scrap weekends or to send with kids who want to collect addresses from friends at school or camp. Kids love having a personalized spiral notebook, especially if you have an uncommon name like “Thena”.

Project 3: Creating a calendar from a favorite page
  1. Chose your background paper from Star Spangled Summer. I liked this wooden look.
  2. I used the Topaz Adjust filter from Topaz Labs on the photo of a car in the July 4th parade and made a simple page.
  3. I went to projects in Digital Image Suite 2006, choose calendars and used the bottom portion of the monthly template to add to my page.

Project 4: Create a Clown from simple Shapes
(Since one of my favorite parts of the parade are the clowns, I thought I would show you a simple way to create your own. Your kids might love for you to print one out for them to use as a mask.)
  1. Follow the chart and select your shapes as in figure 1.
  2. Arrange the basic facial features on the longest oval and add flesh color of your choice.
  3. Add elongated circle behind form to create hair. Fill it with color and use a filter to add texture to it.
  4. Use the distortion tool to add shape and curl to the hair. Use the transparency tool to brush away some of the face to reveal more hair.
  5. Use shapes shown to create the hat and fill with white. Use burn tool to darken edges and add shape.
  6. Add a flower to brim of hat.

There you have it! Some fun and simple things to try with your computer. Have fun and meet me here next month!

Hugs,
Thena
