The Road Home
This month I attended my daughter’s graduation ceremony at Vanderbilt/Peabody, visited my brother and sister in law in Tennessee and the family homestead in Ky. It was bittersweet to go home and be reminded of loss of family and the chances time had wrought. We all faces changes, changes at work, at home and in things that meant a lot to us in our past.
As we drove down the blacktop road that had been the gravel entrance to our family farm, I missed the trees that had once formed a green archway in the summer and a golden tunnel in the fall. I was not prepared to think that those trees would also have aged and withered.
One of the most difficult things was to see the empty spot once occupied by the little country church where I was baptized at age seven. Once regal (to me) family homes were now in decay or missing entirely. Little block buildings that once housed tiny country stores now stood empty or were used as storage. The post office had been moved and the bank was no longer operational. It’s charter now belongs to a bank in Georgia.
The neighboring town where I had shopped by going from store to store in the courthouse square was missing stores like a chopped up Monopoly board. It was like seeing all the railroads or all of the “Yellows” missing as I played the game. One store had recently collapsed leaving still, as of then, a pile of bricks. A modern jail had been (criminally) attached to the historic courthouse. Upon seeing this, I said “NO” aloud to no one in particular, “How could they do that?”
This little reminiscing is not to be a downer and bring the readers to tears, but to remind us each one that change is inevitable and we should take time now to record the people, places, times and events that we love. Take time to record them in your heart and memory if not in your camera lens. Some of my best “scrapbook” pages are in my heart.
Now as we enter June 2007, I would like to share with you some of the memories of my path back home.
One of our lovely ladies on the message board is getting together cards for our military. I know this is also happening all over our country as a way to express our heartfelt gratitude and appreciation for these brave men and woman. I wanted to give you a few ideas from my tribute to our military heroes, Military Moments to use on these cards.
Project 1: The Road Home
I used a photo of some Ky greenery and applied various effects on it from DIP and downloaded plug-in to create the background page. I won’t try to show you exactly how this was done, because all of our experiments will come out differently.
I added a white frame to my photos in Digital Image Pro and then added my poem to each relevant photo.
To get the swirl of the background to go up the hill, I used the transparency brush but at about 40%.
Project 2: Now Create a page about your childhood home.
Create a background by using one of the photos of your home and manipulating it in your software program or using the transparency function on the photo as it is.
Use as many pages as you need to scrapbook your favorite things about your home, your family and your childhood.
Contrast your childhood home with where you live and your life today.
Write a poem about something special in your childhood.
Some things to ponder:
What was good or bad about your house or apartment?
Did you have your own room or share? What was it like?
What was special about your family, your home, your childhood?
How far away is that home from where you are today?
When was the last time you went back?
Can you close your eyes and see the arrangement of the furniture? the color of the walls? the appliances in the kitchen?
Did you have a family pet?
Project 3: Revisiting the Court House Square
Create a new 12 x 12 page at 300 dpi.
Add background from
Celtic Ireland
Creatable.
Add photos. I added one on top of another to complete the building. I used transparency tool and clone to match things up.
Add text.
Project 4: Card to send to our military members
Open flag page from
Land that I Love
.
Insert shape and make it transparent in order for verse to be read easier.
Add verse.
Print as a card following your printer’s instructions.
Now for your monthly venture into creating your own digital supplies.
Project 5: Creating a unique background page
Create a new page and add a few random shapes from Digital Image Pro.
I downloaded a Kaleidoscope effect from online (which works with Digital Image Pro) and applied it.
I used the distort tool in DIP to fill the entire page.
When you experiment with effects and plug-ins, the results are limitless. You can create with colors to match your page and your mood.
Your assignment, should you decide to accept it:
Show your support for our men and women in uniform by creating cards to send to them or for them to send to family.
Create some of your own background papers and elements to mix in with the fabulous items created by PCC artists. It will make you appreciate them even more!
Show your support and appreciation for your child’s teachers by creating cards or useful items for the classroom.
Hug someone.
Meet me back here next month!
Love,
Thena
